I am a member of "Gruppa for alle tegneglade" on Facebook
( Not so easy to translate that to english-The best translation
is "The group for all of us who like to draw":)
-Awesome group by the way, but it is in mainly for norwegians.
Hoewever, there has been a lot of cases where there has for example
been people who just take a drawing from google and then makes
their version of it, but almost exactly like the original painting without
giving the original painter any credit.
This is very rude and is also not allowed in the group ( or
anywhere else, at least in Norway. I know the coyright law for art
is different in each country.)
But as a rule, no matter what country you're living in, you have
to credit the artist. I can not say this enough.
It is rude to the artist, also it is considered destructive becouse
the original artist does not get the honour he or she deserves.
It is not just Facebook, there is also forexample the question of
forexample Tumbler. and other social media.
Example:
Someone on Facebook finds a cool painting on Tumbler og Google.
but he or she doesn't remember who the artist was-
he just downloads the painting or picture without thinking more about it,
paints his or hers version of it and posts it on facebook
with-you guessed it-"the picture is from tumbler" or even worse,
not writing anything at all indicating that the painting is in fact
not his or her work at all.
Now, it is really simple: When you find a cool painting, and
you're thinking, "Gee,that was really cool, I think I want to paint that"
then you simply write it down.
If you got time to try to draw the painting, you've got the five seconds
it takes to write down the name of the artist on a notepad or your
Iphone.;)
You can also try to find the artist by using "Search with google
pictures."
1.If you already got the painting on your computer, simply click
google.Click on google pictures and then click on the small
camera icon. Upload the picture. Search.
Then it will show like this:
..and you will maybe find the painting you're looking for.
You can also of course try to google forexample searching with words,
like I did here:
If you found the painting on forexample Tumblr, it is also worth a try to
simply put forexample "tumblr painting_,,"and whatever it is you're
searching for.
Of course, these are tools you can use if you are not sure about the artists name.
By the way, I'm writing this to spread awareness about the issue.
I am aware that many knows how to do use google pictures search,
so no rude comments please-but I know for a fact that there are also many who
doesn't know about it and doesn't know how to do it.
Not everybody knows how to do everything, even these days with
Facebook,Instagram, Tumbler,Twitter, Pinterest etc.
That's why I made this tutorial.
It's also worth mentioning that it is the artist responcibility to make
a signature and/or logo so that it will be easy to recognize the artist.
Yes, you have the copyright but it's very easy for others to simply
download your painting or photo and claim it as their own.
Finally, there is also paintings and pictures which is
legal to download.
Examples of these are Freedigitalphotos.net and
Dreamstime.com.
However, you should be aware that sometimes it costs money to
download pictures from places like that too, so always check the
rules for that specific website.
Yes, it can be misleading when it says it is free to use, but
anyway, check the rules just to make sure.:)
