Colour pencil portrait tips!

                                  Skin recipe for light/blond hair:
                                  Goldenred Prismacolour for the hair,
added a little bit of brown.
For the skin, I used Prismacolour Premiere Cream and
Lilac, and dark blue and black on the eyes-but Derwent  pencil

Peach is a good colour for the lips.

You can not own Prismacolour pencils and not have a Prismacolour sharpener.
You will destroy your lovely Prismacolour Pencils. For beginners, remember that
there is two different kinds of Prismacolour pencils-you've got Prismacolour premiere pencils
which are more round at the tip, and you've got Prismacolour Verithin pencils.

When you're drawing with Colour Pencil, you should always go for the really good
heavy weight paper. At least 180 grams. I love Koh-I Noor's Pop Draw Paper, it has
such a smooth surface:)

Buying colour pencil books is absolutely good motivation.
You can also find really good Colour pencil books on Kindle.
However, I prefer the good old fashioned ones.

I miss the Antvort art store in Oslo, but anyway-Engebretsen & Søn in Oslo
has a OK selection of colour pencils.
The Derwent Blender is a great tool for getting the colour pencil skin tones and the hair
a smooth touch.

You can buy them seperately, the Derwent Blender and
Derwent Burnisher, but I got mine from the
Derwent 24 Collection Set.

The best tips I've gotten is always try the skin tone before  you
apply it on your drawing.

And it is can also be very educational to make your own colour pencil skin pallette!

However, you can make skin tones just by using two different colours.
Of course.
But if you want to go a bit further. here is some tips I've picked up

*First of all, decide what kind of skin tone you're going for.

Yellow skin tone? Use cream, jasmine, yellow ochre and goldenred
in Prismacolour.

Be veery careful with the orange tones. Too much, there is no going back.
Start easy and take it from there.

Golden "Jessica Alba" skin tone?:)
Begin with pale yellow, go a little further with pale orange,
use a light yellow brown pencil, add a little red brown
around the ereas like under the eyes and the wrinkles that
come when you smile:)
Define the shading with brown.
Remember to make room for highlights. There is tricks, such as
using tape-but I do not recommend it.
And always paint the eyelashes last!
Highlight with a white pencil-forexample
Derwent Chinese White.

Pink Skin Tones
Light Peach, Deco Pink, Pink Rose, Rosy Beige,
Blush Pink, Clay Rose, Pink, Henna.

Very light skin tones:
Cream, jasmine, light peach, pink rose, Rosy beige
in Prismacolour. You can use a bit of blue and violet
on the darker areas and blend it with a flesh coloured pencil.

Blend with Blender or some tissue paper.
You can also use a  blending stick.

The most important thing to remember when your'e doing
a colour pencil painting, is to find out what kind of technique suits you.
